About Mediterraneo Stichting

Established in September 2025, Mediterraneo Stichting is a non-profit organization officially recognized with ANBI status (Public Benefit Organisation)

    • Mediterraneo Stichting aims to introduce and integrate authentic classical world music—rooted in Arab, Greek, and Turkish traditions—into the Dutch cultural landscape. We believe music knows no borders, and by bringing together diverse musical traditions and styles, we enrich Dutch culture. Our unique approach, blending Eastern modalities with Western classical and contemporary influences, inspires new audiences and fosters mutual understanding between cultures.

    1. To create new work and development opportunities for musicians active in world music in the Netherlands.

    2. To organize events, educational projects, and festivals that bring together artists and audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds, facilitating dialogue and exchange between new Dutch residents and local communities.

    3. Through collaboration and experimentation with various styles and creative visions, we build bridges while preserving the authentic spirit of Makam music, Rebetiko, classical Ottoman traditions, and more—all presented in a contemporary and inclusive context.

    4. Committed to spreading positivity, promoting peace, and showcasing the richness of the Mediterranean region in the Netherlands through our activities.

Organization

Stichting Mediterraneo hast he board-director model; at least three unpaid board members and an authorised director.

Onbezoldigde bestuursleden:

    • Mattijs van de Woerd: Bariton opera singer studied at the conservatories of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. He won the Vriendenkrans award from Het Concertgebouw in 2001 and the first prize at the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition in 2003. He has performed with leading opera companies and orchestras worldwide, including the Nationale Opera, Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest, and NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo. His repertoire spans classical and contemporary works, and he has appeared in major operatic roles such as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte and the title role in Don Giovanni. Mattijs is also active in recital and recording projects and is part of the artist collective Splendor Amsterdam.

    • Alexander Chater is a pianist of South African origin who studied classical piano at the Rotterdam Conservatory (Codarts). He is a co-founder and artistic director of Fabrieklassiek, a concert series that presents classical music in unique industrial venues across the Netherlands. Alexander actively performs nationwide as a pianist and concert organizer. Introduced to classical music at a young age through his family, he has developed a broad repertoire and is dedicated to making classical music accessible to diverse audiences.
